Cricnepal/Kathmandu – West Indies met a huge disappointment in Chittagong today, as they collapsed helplessly at score of 61 runs. Bangladesh won the match by 8 wickets and avoided an ODI whitewash.
The score of 61 is the second lowest score of Carribean side in one day cricket. Their lowest score came against South Africa in 2004, when they lost all their wickets for a shameful score of 54 runs. This defeat will be more humiliating for them as it came against Bangladesh, who ranks below them in the ICC ranking.
The decision of fielding first after winning the toss proved right for Bangladesh. They bowled quite aggressively from the very beginning. Bowlers took wickets at regular intervals and made sure that no batsman could make an adjustment. Shafiul Islam (21/2) and Nasir Hossain (3/2) took the most important wickets of the top order batsmen. Ex-skipper Shakib Al Hasan again proved why he was considered as the best allrounder in ODI circuit. He claimed 4 wickets, giving only 16 runs. Keiran Powell (25) and Carlos Brathwaite (11) were the only batsmen who could reach the double figure. Three of the batsmen, including Darren Bravo and Keiron Pollard, failed to open their account.
In reply, the Bangladeshi openers started cautiously, avoiding an early upset. However, Imrul Kayes (11) gave his catch to Pollard off Roach’s bowling when the total score reached 25. West Indies claimed another wicket of Shahriar Nafees (0), but Tamim Iqbal (36*) and captain Mushfiqur Rahim (10*) avoided any further casualties and took Bangladesh to victory. Shakib Al Hasan became the man of the match while Marlon Samuels received the man of the series award.
West Indies won the ODI series 2-1. The T20 series between the two sides was a draw. The 2 match test series is commencing from Friday, October 21.
