Nepal off to a flying start in ACC Premier Cup

Nepal’s national cricket team emerged victorious against Malaysia in the opening match of ACC Men’s Premier Cup 2023. The home side registered an easy six-wicket win at TU Cricket Ground.

Chasing an average target of 236, Nepal lost Aasif Sheikh (1) in the very first over. The second loss came in the last over of the powerplay, with Kushal Bhurtel going back to the pavilion for 31-ball 38. Rohit Paudel and Bhim Sharki then added 66 runs for the third wicket before Virandeep Singh dismissed Rohit Paudel for 42.

Kushal Malla showed no mercy to the bowlers and started smacking all over the park. He shared 112 runs stand with Bhim for the fourth wicket in just 84 balls. Bhim departed for 71(98) in the 36th over with just five required to win.

Dipendra Singh Airee sealed the win for Nepal in 36.2 overs, smacking a boundary. Kushal Malla who hammered five each sixes and fours, remained unbeaten for 70 from just 40 balls. He was adjudged as player of the match for his scintillating knock.

Earlier, Malaysia managed 237/9 on the board after opting to bat first. Captain Ahmad Faiz and Virandeep Singh added 116 runs for the second wicket to boost up visiting team. However, The team couldn’t capitalize on the start after the departure of the skipper. Faiz scored 76 runs, trucking eight fours and one six. Meanwhile, Virandeep scored a sluggish 46.

Khizar Hayat contributed 22 runs, whereas no.9 batter Syazrul Idrus smacked 13-ball 21 at the end.

Sandeep Lamichhane (10-1-48-3) and Sompal Kami (9-0-40-3) bagged three wickets each for Nepal. Lalit Rajbanshi pocketed two, while Gulshan grabbed one.

Nepal will play their next match against Oman on April 21 (Friday) at TU Cricket Ground.
