Basanta Regmi shone with both bat and ball as Nepal defeated a strong Canterbury team by six runs in the 2nd practice match played in New Zealand, today.
Nepal posted a moderate total of 210 runs losing nine wickets in 50 overs with some useful contribution from Gyanendra Malla and Basanta Regmi. Gyanendra scored 47 runs off 74 balls while Basanta need only 32 deliveries to hit a fluent 43 runs including four fours and two sixes. Captain Khadka who was playing well with 26 runs had to return back with an injury. Sharad added 26 runs and was involved in a crucial partnership with Gynendra Mall after the loss of Anil, Mahesh and Paras. W Lonsdale and Ross were among the wicket takers for Canterbury with two wickets each. Canterbury made two run outs including that of Basanta.
In reply, Canterbury were in good position to win the game but the man in crisis”Basanta” changed the course of match with the wicket of B Ransom and G Drake in quick succession. B Ranson was trapped lbw by Basanta for 54 runs while G Drake couldn’t open his account. J Case showed some fight playing a fine innings of 46 runs but it was all over for Canterbury after he was bowled by Sompal.
13 runs was needed off the last over for Canterbury with a wicket in hand but Jitendra Mukhiya conceded six runs only to hand Nepal a tough win. Basanta bowled brilliantly with a figure of 10-3-19-3. Nepal were brilliant in the field and made three run outs.
Nepal will play their 3rd practice Match tomorrow.
