CricNepal-Pubudu Dassanayake is leaving for Canada today and with CAN’s indecision regarding his tenure-it’s uncertain whether or not he will return to Nepal. Dassanayake was handed a 3 months temporary extension after his 2 years tenure ended on March 31st 2014. (After being promised 1 year term extension.)
“I have cleary said everywhere I am willing to work even longer period with Nepal and I am confident that I can get results. But the decision goes back to back and it’s up to CAN to decide whatever they want. “ said Pubudu Dassanayake talking to Cricnepal a few days back.
“Presonally I am disappointed-I am fine whatever the decision is. The problem is there is no decision. I am just waiting. But the way things are going the time will push me to take my own decision” he added.
Dassanayake also pointed out that not knowing what his future in Nepal Cricket is is makes it incredibly hard to plan for the next tournament. Nepal is set o play Division 3 in November.
The last two years under Pubudu have been the golden years of Nepali Cricket. Nepal won two ICC World Cricket League Titles, played three global qualifiers, were crowned the Asian Champions, qualified for the T20 World Cup, and to top those off, the team impressed everyone in the World Cup with their spirit and play. With the exceptionally stirring show at the World Cup, the Cricket’s festivities in Nepal are just starting. This all happened after Pubudu Dassanayake took over coaching Nepal in September 2011.
In 2011 ACC T20-Pubudu’s first outing as Nepal’s coach-Nepal in Dasanayake’s own words-”served pretty soft cricket”. The softness was exposed especially against stronger teams like Afghanistan and UAE against whom Nepali batters after losing few initial wickets started blocking even full tosses and half volleys. Two years later Nepal has beaten UAE 4 times in T20s and twice in One Day Cricket. Nepal finally got over the Afghan jinx; defeating them in the biggest stage of it all the World T20. The manner he has transformed the soft Nepali cricketers to aggressive world class athletes will go down in Cricket’s history as one of the most successful cricket stories.
After all this it’s a mystery why CAN is so reluctant to add his tenure!
