Lamichhane’s hat-trick drowns Ireland, Nepal U19 through to quaters

Kathmandu- Leg Spinner Sandeep Lamichhane’s hat-trick in 32nd over drowned Ireland U19 in their second match of ICC U19 World Cup 2016, at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah on Saturday.

Nepal U19 132/2 (25.3) defeated Ireland U19 131/9 (50.0) by 8 wickets (with 147 balls remaining)

In the meantime, he also became Nepal’s first bowler to take a hat-trick in U19 World Cup and the second after Avinash Cricket in U19 (International) for Nepal. Sandip completed his spell of bowling picking five wickets in the match, as Ireland collapsed from 3 for 79 to 8 for 92. Ireland eventually made 131 for 9 in allotted overs.

The climax started when Lamichhane broke the 32 runs partnership between L Tucker and Dennison. He got Tucker caught by Airee in the third delivery of the 32nd over. The next delivery, Dennson tried to poke a length ball outside off only to be caught by the wicketkeeper- Raju Rijal. New batsman in, F Tucker tired to drive the ball but missed everything and the ball skidded through to hit the stumps, that gave Lamichhane a hat-trick.

Very next over, Lamichhane bowled William MacClintok to get a five wicket haul. Ireland put on 35 runs for the 9th wicket, that carried them to 131 for 9 at the end of the inning. Nepal needed 132 runs to win the match.

A wicket each from Sunil Dhamala and Sushil Kandel had earlier put Nepal in control after a cautious start from Ireland, with Skipper Jack Tector and Doheny adding 39 runs for the first wicket in 14.2 overs. Dhamala provided Nepal the first wicket when he had Doheny caught by Sandeep Sunar for 14 runs. Tector was caught at deep square leg, attempting a big shot by Sunar again off Kandel.

Yogendra Karki and Aarif Sheikh then guided Nepal to a comfortable win with an unbroken 77 runs partnership in 25.3 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Karki remained unbeaten on 61 runs off 81 balls while Sheikh made 31 not out off 36 balls. Although, Nepal lost Sandeep Sunar for a duck, another opener Sunil Dhamala and Karki shared 55 runs for the second wicket to carry the chase further. Dhamala got out G McClintok after scoring 28 runs off 35 balls.

If India defeats New Zealand today, Nepal and India will qualify for the super leagues before playing each other in the group stage.

Nepal faces India in the third match on Monday, 1st February, 2016.
