Nepal thump Kenya for second win

Kathmandu – Nepal Cricket Team celebrated a massive win after they thrash African Nation Kenya by 6 wickets today at the ICC Academy Oval 2, Dubai in ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers 2013.

Nepal 186/4 (19.4 overs) defeated Kenya 182/7 (20 overs)

Skipper Paras Khadka won the toss and invited Kenya to bat first. The Nepalese bowlers responded to their Skipper’s decision with early breakthrough. Basanta Regmi, the offspinner took the first wicket of Alex Obanda(3) in his first ball of the over. Similarly, Jitendra Mukhiya took the two massive wickets of Steve Tikolo(11) & Collins Obuya(6) in consecutive deliveries to put the Kenyan on the back-foot. Kenya lost another wicket of Thomas Odoyo in a runout, he made 7 runs and they were in deep trouble. At this stage, they were tottering at 32/4 in 6.4 overs.

At the crease, Morris Ouma & Rakep Patel(103) both had to consolidate the inning for Kenya. As the partnership was progressing, Rakep Patel started to thrash the Nepalese bowlers out of the ground, he smashed 10 sixes in his innings with 5 fours to score a match winning knock of 103 off 45 balls. At the other end, Ouma held his crease to give his partner a free go.

Nepalese Skipper was worried as the duo took the score to 163 runs in 17.6 overs. With no choice, he himself came to bowl and luckily he got the breakthrough bowling the Centurion out. Before the wicket, they had a partnership of 131 runs for the fifth wicket. Ouma(37) followed him later in 18.2 overs as he became the victim of Basanta Regmi. Kenya then managed to score 182 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

Sharad Vesawkar was the culprit during Nepalese bowling as he was smashed for 30 runs in a single over he bowled. Besides that, Jitendra Mukhiya(4-31-2) and Basanta Regmi(4-34-2) took two wickets each whereas Paras Khadka(4-25-1) took 1 wicket.

Nepal lost early wicket of Pradeep Airee(1) in the first ball of second over. He was caught by Rakep Patel of Ragheb Aga’s bowling. Gyanendra Malla then came at the crease, he along with Wicketkeeper Batsman Subash Khakurel made 77 runs for the second wicket. As Nepal were scoring comfortably, Malla was stumped by wicketkeeper Morris Ouma in 10.3 overs. He smashed 6 fours before the dismissal.

In-form Skipper took the guard and built a vital 45 runs partnership with Khakurel. Khakurel then completed his well made half century before being run out by Obuya. He made 54 runs off 48 balls with 6 fours in the innings leaving Nepal to 128/3 in 15.5 overs. They needed 55 runs from 4.1 overs and Binod Bhandari joined Khadka at the crease. He didn’t last long and was bowled by Nehemiah Odhiambo for 12 runs.

At this stage, Nepal were 163-4 at 18.4 overs. They needed 20 runs from 8 balls. The match was going for a nail biting finish. In the middle of all, Paras Khadka(54runs off 31 balls,3 fours & 4 sixes) managed to score his half century.

Sarad Vesawkar, the culprit with the ball was at the crease to show great fight with the bat today and it worked for him as he smashed 2, 1, 6, 2, 6, 6 off the six deliveries he faced and with that Nepal won the match by 6 wickets with 2 balls to spare.

For Kenya, Ragheb Aga, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Hiren Varaiya shared wicket apiece. Nepal achieved their biggest ever target in Twenty20 format today. Previously, their highest run-chase of 157 was against Bahrain in the UAE in 2009. Nepal achieved 159 in the 18th over then.

Nepal will now face Scotland on Monday, November 18.
