Nepal to play first ODI match against Test playing nation during World Cup Qualifier

International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the group division and all the fixtures of ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers. The much-anticipated tournament will see ten teams fighting for the remaining two spots in the Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

Two times world champions – West Indies, the host Zimbabwe, USA, Netherlands and Nepal are placed in Group A. Meanwhile, the champions of 1996 – Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland, Oman and UAE are in Group B.

Nepal, having been grouped with Zimbabwe and West Indies, has confirmed they will be playing their first-ever ODI match against a Test-playing nation. Since attaining ODI status in 2018, Nepal has played 51 ODI matches, winning 28 games, suffered 21 defeats, experienced one tie, and had one match abandoned due to rain.

The match scheduled for June 18 between Nepal and Zimbabwe will mark Nepal’s maiden encounter with a Test-playing nation in an ODI match. Following that, on June 22, Nepal will take on West Indies, which will be their second match against a Test-playing team and their first encounter with the reigning WorldCup champions in the ODI format.

The tournament is scheduled to take place between June 18th and July 9th. The top three teams from both groups will advance to the Super Six stage. In the Super Six, those teams will face each other, and the two teams with the highest rankings will proceed to the final. Both finalists will secure their spots in the Cricket World Cup 2023.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has recently unveiled the 22-man preliminary squad, and the squad to tour Zimbabwe will be announced after a short closed camp. Nepal is scheduled to have warm-up matches against UAE and Oman on June 13 and 15, respectively, ahead of the tournament.
