Sandeep Lamichhane on Friday broke the record for the fastest bowler in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket to complete 100 wickets.

Lamichhane achieved the milestone in Nepal’s 50th ODI match, surpassing the previous record held by Afghan superstar Rashid Khan.

Lamichhane achieved the feat in just 42 matches, beating Khan’s record of 44 ODI matches. The second and third-fastest bowlers to reach 100 ODI wickets were Mitchell Starc of Australia and Pakistan’s Shaqlin Mushtaq, achieving the record in 52 and 53 matches, respectively.

Lamichhane also became the first Nepalese player to reach 100 ODI wickets when he dismissed Adeel Shafique in the third ball of the 13th over, his first of the match in Nepal’s second game of the ACC Premier Cup against Oman at TU Cricket Ground on Friday. He dismissed Zeeshan Maqsood for a duck in the same over, followed by a wicket of Kashyap Prajapati in the next over.

The 22 years old played his debut ODI match in August 2018 against the Netherlands, in Nepal’s first-ever ODI match. He picked up one wicket in that match, dismissing Stephan Myburgh. Since then, he has become an integral part of the Nepali team’s bowling lineup and has recorded three five-wicket hauls and eight four-wicket hauls.

Sandeep Lamichhane’s wicket tally against different nations:

  • PNG – 25 Wickets (9 matches)
  • UAE – 22 Wickets (10 matches)
  • USA – 15 Wickets (6 matches)
  • Namibia – 14 Wickets (4 matches)
  • Scotland – 10 Wickets (4 matches)
  • Oman – 9* Wickets (7 matches)
  • Netherlands – 4 Wickets (2 matches)
