Sikandar Raza star in Zimbabwe’s triumph over Ireland

Zimbabwe has started the T20 World Cup 2022 in style, defeating Ireland in their first match in a major tournament since 2016. Sikandar Raza was the hero for Zimbabwe in 31 runs victory.

Invited to bat first at Bellerive Oval, Zimbabwe were in trouble losing three wickets for 37 runs within the powerplay, later turned to 79/4 after halfway. Zimbabwe then added 95 runs from the following 10 overs, posting a decent total of 174. Raza hammered 82 runs from 48 balls, smacking five fours and an equal number of sixes, while Luke Jongwe smashed an unbeaten 20 from 10 balls at the end. Joshua Little grabbed three wickets for Ireland, whereas Mark Adair and Simi Singh took two wickets each.

Chasing a fine total, Ireland were in trouble straightaway, losing four wickets for just 22 runs. Muzarabani and Ngarava dismissed two batters each as Zimbabwe were in the driving seat. No one could produce a miracle for Ireland as they were stopped for 143/9. Curtis Campher topped the chart with 27 runs, whereas George Dockrell and Gareth Delany assisted 24 runs each.

Ireland will be facing Scotland on 19th October at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, while Ireland takes on West Indies at the same venue afterward.
