Nepal likely to miss Asia Cup T20 2016

Melbourne – Nepalese Cricket team is likely to miss the upcoming Asia Cup T20 2016 to be held between 1 and 10 march in India or Bangladesh due to the loss of Twenty20 International Status.

According to the ESPNCricinfo, only one associate team will get the opportunity to take part in the main draw of the Asia Cup T20 next year. Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Oman and UAE will compete a four-team qualifier in November in UAE and the winner will join the other four Asian Test-playing nations, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to play the round-robin tournament.

Nepal lost its T20 International Status after a miserable performance in ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2015 in Ireland and Scotland. Following the status loss, they are unable to compete in the mainstream tournament organised by International Cricket Council (ICC).

After the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was downsized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in April 2015, it was announced that upcoming Asia Cup events will be played on rotation basis in One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) format based on respective next world events under the ICC.

Nepal will play Papua New Guinea in the second round of ICC World Cricket League Championship 2015-2017 which is scheduled to be in November in Kathmandu.
