The Government of Nepal has officially listed the Kirtipur-based cricket stadium under the country's National Priority Projects, marking a major step toward transforming Nepal’s most iconic cricket venue into a modern, high-capacity international facility.
According to the Ministry of Urban Development, the decision follows the approval of the stadium's master plan, with instructions already issued to concerned stakeholders to move forward with a new agreement framework for the project's next phase.
Master Plan Approved, New Agreement Process Begins
The current government approved the TU Cricket Ground master plan in the final week of September last year, directing relevant authorities to initiate processes required for further development.
A Cabinet meeting has also instructed multiple institutions — including Tribhuvan University (TU), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Council (NSC) — to proceed with land acquisition and project implementation as required under existing legal provisions.
Rs 10 Billion Planned to Upgrade Stadium to Modern Standard
The Ministry of Urban Development has stated that under the approved master plan, the government is preparing to invest an additional Rs 10 billion into the stadium structure.
Once completed, the investment is expected to significantly expand the venue’s capacity and upgrade it into a state-of-the-art cricket stadium, strengthening Nepal’s readiness to host bigger international tournaments and high-profile cricket events.
Kirtipur has long remained the heart of Nepali cricket — and with this national priority status, the venue is now set for its most ambitious transformation yet.
