Asia Cup 2023 likely to be cancelled as BCCI opposes PCB’s hybrid model proposal

The news of the potential cancellation of Asia Cup 2023 has popped out. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about where the Asia Cup cricket tournament should be hosted. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have been unable to reach an agreement, with the PCB insisting on hosting the tournament in Pakistan in September 2023.

The proposed hybrid model, where the Indian team would play their matches outside of Pakistan, has also been reportedly rejected. The PCB has rejected the idea of hosting the tournament in another country, despite Sri Lanka and the UAE expressing interest. As a result, the Asia Cup 2023 may not take place.

Jay Shah, The president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), stated two weeks ago that the council is waiting for feedback from the participating countries in order to make a final decision on where the 2023 Asia Cup tournament will be held. Shah mentioned that they are also looking for clarity regarding the India-Pakistan match, as per Pakistan Cricket.

The BCCI is also prepared for the possibility that the Asia Cup may not happen. Reports suggest that they are planning a new tournament involving five nations that could take place during the same time slot as the Asia Cup if it is cancelled.

Initially, the hybrid model of the tournament proposed by the PCB appeared to be a solution to the disagreements between the two boards. However, recent reports suggest that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who initially showed interest in the model, is now opposed to it.
