Pakistan’s one of the greatest Cricketer and a former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been arrested in Islamabad while attending a hearing to seek bail in several cases. The arrest warrant accuses him of corruption under a section of the National Accountability Ordinance.

He was reportedly arrested by the Pakistan Rangers and handed over to the National Accountability Bureau for further investigation. The allegations relate to the donation of land for a university he founded, which is claimed to have been linked to an influential businessman. The arrest comes amid a political climate of instability, with the ruling party accused of hindering democratic rights by refusing to hold elections.

Imran has been a popular politician in the country, with his party winning 30 of 37 by-elections in the last eight months.

In November last year, while leading a protest march in Wazirabad, Punjab, Imran was the target of an attempted murder and was wounded by a bullet in his leg.

Imran Khan led Pakistan to their only ICC ODI World Cup triumph in 1992. Khan has 3807 runs and 362 wickets in Test matches while 3709 runs and 175 wickets in ODI. His averages (37 with the bat, 22 with the ball) put him at the top of the quartet of allrounders (Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, and Kapil Dev being the others) who dominated Test cricket in the 1980s.
