Joe Root, the former Test captain of the England cricket team, made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on May 7th, Sunday. Root was involved in the Rajasthan Royal’s playing XI for the first time in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Although Root was in the playing XI, he didn’t get the chance to bat in his first IPL match. This is not a new experience for him, as he also did not get the opportunity to bat in a few more of his debut matches.
He didn’t get the chance to bat in his T20I debut against India in 2012. Likely, His ODI debut against India in 2013 also saw him wait for the next match to bat. Moreover, he didn’t get the opportunity to bat in his debut match in The Hundred, a new 100-ball cricket tournament in England.
However, He got to showcase his talent in his test debut against India in 2012. He scored a marathon 73 in the first inning and an unbeaten 20 in the next inning.
Root is known for his batting skills and his consistent performances in Test cricket. However, he has not been a regular member of England’s limited-overs squads in recent times, and his participation in the IPL is seen as a way to gain more experience in the shorter formats of the game.
Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 215 runs in a thrilling contest to hand Rajasthan a four-wicket loss in Root’s first match.
