Tribhuvan University cricket players lock out TU Stadium

KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan University (TU) cricket team today padlocked the TU Stadium for an indefinite period demanding the improvement of the team’s level.

A team of the University led by the skipper Anil Adhikari padlocked the gates of the only international stadium at 3:00PM today. Earlier, the team submitted a three-point memorandum to the Free Student Union of TU and Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) after their verbal request went into deaf ears.

The protestors have demanded to make public the Memorandum of Understanding reached between the TU and CAN and the financial dealings related to the grounds. They also demanded the CAN to include the TU team in all the national tournaments played at the stadium free of cost and to appoint a coach for the TU team.

“We knocked the CAN and TU doors so many times and we were forced to take the step after they turned deaf ears towards our repeated pleas,” said the skipper of the TU team Anil Adhikari. He further said the team was victimised by the politics in University.

He also blamed that the players for the university teams were not selected as per their caliber alone, but on the basis of their political backgrounds.

CAN president Binay Raj Pandey said he was not aware of any such incident. “We have not received any memorandum officially, and I am totally unaware about it,” said Pandey. However, Pandey said that he had received a call from TU captain (Adhikari) demanding their participation in an inter-college tournament. “We are ready to address their demands if they come officially. We can not act on any individual’s demands.”
