Nepal settle for second position in the group as rain halts UAE clash

The Nepalese women’s team’s crucial match against UAE women in the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier has been called off due to the rain. The match at Selangor Turf Club, Kuala Lumpur, was abandoned without a toss due to persistent rain.

With both teams sharing 1-1 point, UAE has finished as the table topper, whilst Nepal ends up in the second position. Both Nepal and UAE won four matches and ended up with nine points from five matches, but the UAE had a better NRR as compared to Nepal.

Nepal will now face either Thailand or Hong Kong in the semifinal of the tournament. Group B’s runner-up will play against Group A’s winner. The winner between Hong Kong and Thailand will confirm Nepal’s opposition. Hong Kong are at the top, winning three matches (6 points), whilst Thailand has five points after one match being called off due to rain.

Nepal started the tournament with a dramatic five-run win over Malaysia. They restricted Bahrain to 31 and chased the target in just 2.5 overs. In the third match, Nepal settled Bhutan to a mere title but had to fight hard for the win. Nepal confirmed a spot in the semifinal after a win against Qatar in the fourth match.

Two finalists of the Asia Qualifier will book a place in the Global Qualifier to be held in Sri Lanka. Ten teams – Sri Lanka, Ireland and eight teams coming from the qualifiers will compete in the Global Qualifier, and the top two teams will seal the ticket to the main event in Bangladesh, where ten teams will compete.
