Cricket Ireland has revealed the squad for World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. Andrew Balbirnie will be leading the 15-man squad announced on Wednesday.
Ireland are placed in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Scotland, UAE and Oman. They will kick off the tournament on June 19, facing Oman. They will play a warm-up match against USA and Netherlands before starting things in the main event.
The national men’s selector, Andrew White, said, “We’re heading into a big few months, and it’s looking at what personnel we need from a tactical point of view, who are in form, and a squad composition that suits the conditions we are likely to face. “Qualifier events are tough, cut-throat competitions at times, and a balance of talent, form and experience is essential. We believe we have achieved that, and I know that Irish supporters will be right behind the players and staff in their quest for World Cup qualification.”
The tournament is scheduled to take place between June 18th and July 9th. The top three teams from both groups will advance to the Super Six stage. In the Super Six, those teams will face each other, and the two teams with the highest rankings will proceed to the final. Both finalists will secure their spots in the Cricket World Cup 2023. ICC has already revealed the fixtures for the tournament.
West Indies, Netherlands and Scotland have already made official announcements regarding their respective squads for the tournament. On the other hand, Nepal has unveiled a preliminary squad comprising 22 players.
