Nepal secures final spot in women’s T20I Quadrangular series despite loss to Malaysia

The Nepalese national women’s cricket team faced a loss against Malaysia women in the last group stage match of the Quadrangular T20I series on Friday. Despite a loss, Nepal has secured a place in the final.

Nepal, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Kuwait are playing a T20I Quadrangular series in Malaysia ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier 2023. Nepal and Hong Kong will now battle in the final.

Nepal, Hong Kong and Malaysia won two matches each. However, Nepal topped the points table with a better Net Run Rate. Hong Kong edged Malaysia in NRR and finished second. Similarly, Kuwait ended up pointless.

Invited to bat first, Nepal managed 83/7 on the board in an 18-over contest. Indu Barma and Kajal Shrestha scored 20 and 18 runs respectively. Rubina Chhetri top-scored with 23 runs.

Ainna Hamizah Hashim, Mahirah Izzati Ismail, and Nur Dania Syuhada Abad Samad picked up two wickets each for Malaysia.

In response, the home side chased the target in 16.2 overs, losing for wickets. Opener Ainna Hamizah Hashim scored the highest 37 runs to guide her side to a victory with ten balls spare. Mahirah Izzati Ismail also contributed 21 runs.

Rubina Chhetri, Puja Mahato and Sita Rana Magar picked up one wicket each for Nepal.

Nepal and Hong Kong will play the final on Saturday.
