Australia retain Ashes after fourth test final-day washout

Rain washed-out the fourth test between England and Australia

Australia have retained the Ashes in anti-climatic fashion on a rain-washout final day of the fourth test in Old Trafford, Manchester. They lead the series 2-1 with one match to play.

The home team needed five more wickets on Sunday to dismiss the visitors, however, the rain washed out the whole day and spoiled England’s chance to level the series.

Only 30 overs were possible due to the rain-hit day four on Saturday.

England posted 592 runs in the first innings, their highest Ashes innings total on home soil since 1985. In reply, Australia were dismissed for 317 in their first innings.

Meanwhile, Australia were batting at 215 for 5 in their second innings before the rain interrupted the day 4.

Both the teams will play their fifth and final test at The Oval on July 27.
